The smaller lakes that are to the north of the Canadian Shield are very common with fishermen, as they are known for having a large number of fairly large pike living within them. These areas do not have such heavy pressures from fishing as the southern lakes do, therefore the pike are able to survive longer and grow to vast lengths.

The most popular lakes within the United States of America are located within Minnesota and they are home to some of the best northern pike fishing. The Lake of the Woods area is situated on the border between Canada and Minnesota. This lake is known for having some pretty big pike, ranging between thirty-six and forty inches in length. The lake that is known as Mille Lacs is located in Minnesota, and it is in fact the second biggest lake covering about one hundred and thirty two thousand acres.

This lake is more common for walleye fishing; however there is also a vast amount of pike in the local area.  The Leech Lake is located within the area of Minnesota. This lake has a vast population of northern pike. It is not uncommon for fishermen at the Leech Lake to catch a northern pike whilst fishing for species such as walleyes. This is a good lake for fishermen that want to target northern pike; however it is best to start off with the weedy areas of the lake.

Lake Vermilion, that is also located within the area of Minnesota, has one thousand two hundred miles of shore, and there are about three hundred and sixty five islands that enable fishermen to have a vast area in which to fish for northern pike. In this area some of the northern pike that have been caught weigh between ten and fifteen pounds.

There are three good lakes within Canada for northern pike fishing. These lakes are the Lakes of the Wood, Eagle Lake, Lac Seul and Red Lake. The Lake of the Wood is one of the best places for fishing. There are a lot of places that are situated on the shore of the lake, so there is no need to drive too far. This is a good lake for catching the big northern pikes and other fish as well. The Eagle Lake is located to the north of the Canadian border with Minnesota. This lake has a lot of big fish; however it is still not very popular with fishermen.

The Lake Lac Seul is located in the northern part of Canada so may require some traveling; however it is well worth the journey.  The Red Lake is also located in Canada. This is one of the best lakes for catching large northern pike.
