South Dakota Walleye Fishing

Due to their amazing eyesight the best time to fish for this species would be late evening to midnight. You’ll find them to be the most active during this time because of the dark waters. Usually, cloudy and light rainy days are great times to seek out this species as well. They will be the least active and hardest to find on bright sunny days because they avoid the direct sunlight.

The weather has a huge effect on how they will respond to your bait. Learning how they react in different weather conditions will greatly increase the amount of success you have each time you go fishing. Make note of what works best in each situation and then make it a habit to check the forecast before heading out. This way, you’ll have a good idea of which baits and tactics will work the best before you even get started.

Where to Fish for Walleye in South Dakota

There are a number of different places to go fishing for the walleye in South Dakota. It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting or recently moved to the area it should be a great place to fish nearby. There are many smaller not so well-known places to go fishing for the walleye in South Dakota but you’ll find many larger, well-known ones too.

*         Angostura Reservoir
*         Lake Traverse
*         Belle Fourche Reservoir
*         Lake Madison
*         Bitter Lake
*         Waubay Lake
*         Lake Thompson
*         Lake Sharpe
*         Lake Albert

In the spring the walleye will spawn and they prefer to migrate from the lake into the feeder streams to lay their eggs. If this is not an option for them they will look for shallow shoals and bars that have a clean bottom and that are located near the deep water.
