3. Equipment for Ice Fishing – You are obviously going to need to have your rods, reels and baits, but you are also going to need some other equipment that you are not going to need when the weather is warm. Aside from an ice fishing shelter, if you choose to have one, you are going to need something to bore through the ice with. You do not want to use an ice pick or a crow bar as these can make cracks in the ice that compromise the safety of it. An auger is the best choice and if you can find one that battery operated, you are going to save yourself some time. Hand warmers or a heater can make the trip a bit more comfortable and you want to make sure you bring lots of water and food to keep you going when the wind drains you of energy. Do not forget a filet knife, two way radios and some way to start a fire if it is needed.
4. How to Fish for Walleye in the Winter – You need to keep in mind that all the tactics that you use for walleye in the warmer months are going to be disastrous in the cold of winter. Trolling is the most effective means for catching walleye when it is warm because they are very active, in the winter months though, they are going to slow down so you do not want to use quick motions when fishing. Instead, drop your baited line down the hole in the ice slowly. You want to reel it in even slower so you give the walleye a chance to get to the bait without them moving too fast. Remember that they are going to be hungry but they are not going to have a lot of energy. For this reason, you need to allow them the time to strike at the bait before you can reel them in.
