All About Spooning

What is spooning?

Spooning is the art of skimming across the water surface imitating movement of minnows or other small baitfish. This takes place at the shoreline or from a boat. The typical procedure is for the shoreline. With that in mind, we will begin there. From the shoreline, cast your line out as far as possible without hitting a snag on surrounding structure. Keep your rod positioned so that the tip remains pointed in the direction of the spoon. With the spoon descending towards the water surface, quickly start reeling the line in. As the spoon hits the water, lift the tip of your rod upwards and keep it over your head. Continue rapid retrieval of the line. When the retrieve starts before the spoon hits the water, the skimming action will be set in motion. The main piece of equipment is a broad based “spoon” hook. Spoon hooks are available in various weights. The most common being _ ounces and _ ounces in weight. The _-ounce spoon is effective in medium water depths and typically remains in the strike zone for longer periods. On the other end of the spectrum, a _-ounce spoon is effective when fish are not active or feeding. When not doing either one of these action, fish are hanging out at the bottom. Therefore, this weight spoon reaches the bottom efficiently. Spooning is an effective technique during winter and summer months. This is typically when bass hang out at deeper water depths. There really is no bad time of year to give spooning a shot. With a little practice, patience and time, you can become a spooning expert. Soon finding those annoying hiding spots of your favorite fish will become a breeze.
