Can I be successful fly fishing for walleye? Do other people do it, and if so, how?
More and more anglers are fly-fishing for walleye than ever before. The thing about fly-fishing is you have to present the bait to the walleye so they do not have to chase it far. If you are wading in the water, you have to be perfectly still with very little to on movement at all. The walleye as well as any fish will run from any movement or vibration in the water. That is the tricky part about fly-fishing. Trout are different from walleye and I know many anglers that use the fly-fishing technique for trout. You want to use a jig. The weight is going to depend on the water depth and the current. You need to get down to the bottom and that can be the tricky part. You will have to practice until you master the technique to catching walleye fly-fishing. There is no easy way to learn how to do it. You are going to have to try it at your favorite river or lake where you can wade in the water a bit. You could do it from shore, only if you can get out deep enough to reach the walleye hideouts. I would say, practice fly-fishing during the spring months after spawning. You should be able to perfect your style and technique a bit during this time. The walleye are not as spooked after spawning and they are hungry. I wish you luck in your quest for fly fishing for good old big eyes.
