Can you give me some good techniques and baits to use for walleye fishing on Lake Shelbyville?
As with any fishing, the techniques and bait you use will depend on the time of year and the water conditions. The best times to fish this particular lake for walleye are from April to July. If you choose to fish in September or October, the walleye catch will be spotty. During the month of July, you can fish near the ramps and rocky areas with a spinnerbait. In June, you can fish the covered rock areas and you can offer night crawlers and jigs. In early June you can use night crawlers, jig a minnow and crankbaits or even a Rattle L Trap. In May and April, look by the rip-rap and timber. Fish with a jig and minnow. In addition, the popular lure colors at this time in these areas are silver speckle and chartreuses. The best way to present the bait is by casting, trolling or just drifting. You can also just drop into the weed beds if the schools are there. The best way to do this is to drop to the bottom and bring the bait up about six inches. This has worked very well on this lake with many walleyes being caught. If you do go fishing on the lake, remember to go early in the morning before the sun comes up or later at night as the sun sets. On overcast days, you can fish about ten to fifteen feet of water. Drifting will work well in the deeper waters on the lake.
