I need some night fishing tips for catching walleye…can you help?
Of course! Walleye are known to maintain certain sensitivity to light. That is why they spend most of the day light hours in deep water depth levels. As night begins to fall, they will move towards the water surface feeling safe and secure under the cover of darkness. This is your time to strike. Start by gaining a certain level of familiarity with the body of water you are about to fish. Arrive shortly before sunset and try to pinpoint where the walleye may be hiding out. Be sure to check out shallow water obstructions and areas where the bottom surface changes from sand to rock or mud to hard surface and any combination in between. Locate weed beds and you just may be lucky enough to stumble on a group of walleye hanging out in the weeds. Look for breaks in the weed bed and run a straight break to find hiding spots such as inside turns that are not visible to the naked eye. Another great place to find walleye at night is entrances to bays or harbors. Shallow pathways with deeper waters in close range all but guarantee the presence of walleye. Lure selections need to be bright and attractive. Walleyes will instantly be drawn to any lures that glow in the dark. A great product to try is the Thill Nite Brite, Lighted Float. It is a slip float and fixed float in one product. The glow is twenty times brighter than a normal glow in the dark product. Match this with a 1/16 or 1/32 ounce jig for the best chance of catching nighttime walleye. The jig gives off a bright color illumination that will catch the walleye attention almost instantly. Anything with bright color will go a long way towards attracting the attention of hungry walleye at night. Good luck!
