When walleye fishing in Virginia, remmeber that walleye are not fussy eaters although they do prefer small fish, specifically minnows. With that in mind, select live and plastic baits to coax walleye out of their hiding spots. Virginia walleye favor crank baits, spoons, small spinner baits and plastic worms. Tailor baits selection to the time of year. For instance, walleye move toward shallow water in springtime. There is no need to select baits that effectively go deep. Stick with small crank baits, jigs and plastic worms. Navigate gravel and rock ledges, and other submerged structures.
When summer rolls around, the water temperatures warm up. Walleye will hang out in that annoying middle depth level between shallow and deeper terrain. Go after them with crank baits, jigs and plastic worms. Any bait that mirrors the movements of crawfish is going to be a big hit with walleye. Navigate rock points and gravel over hangs until the depth where walleye are is determined. Not much changes as fall comes into play.
In addition to a summer arsenal, add in spoon baits for more effects. For the winter, water temperatures are dropping and so is the activity level of walleyes. This is going to require deeper depth navigations. Keep bait selections of jigs, spoons and plastic worms to a slower pace. In a river setting, bait selections of jigs, small jerk baits and minnows are ideal for these deeper depth requirements.
