A great location for walleye fishing Ohio has to offer is Salt Fork Lake, where walleyes up to 30 inches have recently been netted. If you make a trek out to this location, avoid much of the lake that is better suited for largemouth bass and head to the main-lake basin near the dam, where there are lots of rocky areas that walleyes prefer. Note that walleyes may choose to spawn on nearby riprap in this area due to a lack of availability of better spawning locations.
Of course, when discussing walleye fishing, Ohio anglers must make brief mention of the Ohio River. Look for walleye most commonly in the upper reaches of the area of the river that actually runs through Ohio. Tailrace areas are among the best spots to catch walleye here. If you prefer fishing the rivers, you might also try Maumee River, a tributary of Lake Erie running from Ottawa County. Beware, though, if you are a crowd hater because this river is often packed with anglers during spawning season. This is because it is a huge producer of huge walleye, ranging between 16 and 26 inches. Also be aware of all the special regulations imposed upon fishing in the Maumee River before you go. If you don’t like crowds or regulations, obviously Ohio has many other optimal walleye fishing locations to choose from, so pick one you like and be on your way!
