If the Walleye aren’t in the shallows and aren’t in deep water – where are they?
Depending on the time of year, you find walleye hiding by underground islands, rock piles and in the humps. The walleye is known for its fondness of structural environments. Locating walleye with a fish locater might be harder to do than locating their hiding places. Use your locater to find underwater islands and rock pile near shore or a little further out. Another place to look for walleyes are where the mouth of the river and the lake come together. You can also look in the weeded areas of rivers and lake where they love to feed and hide.
As everyone knows, the bottom of lakes and some rivers are not flat. They have what one would call gullies if it were on land, but underwater they are called humps. These humps are sometimes as deep as eighteen feet. The walleyes will seek out these areas for a confined area when they have no other structures such as weeds, rock piles and underwater islands to hide by during the day. They also find this area to be a better feeding ground.
If you are going to fish for walleye in the humps, you are going to need to know where they are and how to get to them. If you use a depth finder to find areas that are deeper than the lake floor around it, you might consider using the fish locator to check the area. This also holds true during the winter when you want to locate fish for ice fishing.
