What’s the best way to catch walleye from a canoe?
Catching walleye from a canoe is pretty much the same as being in a boat or from the shore, except it will be a lot more relaxing when you take into account that you won’t have a boat engine running. You will be leisurely making your way around the lake or river you’re fishing at. You want to make sure you have the lures that will attract walleye. Find the right area that walleye will normally hang out in. Those are the deeper waters that usually hold a lot of forage that the walleye can hide in when looking to catch their food. With the right bait in line you will attract a lot more walleye than if you use the lures that don’t work. Pick a jig or crank bait. You want to get brighter colors on the lure; this will allow it to stand out in the dark murky water that the walleye love to stay in. Plus you will need the right weight of jig or lure, and the proper size. If you get a jig that is too light it may not travel to the bottom, thus it won’t get close enough to the walleyes’ hang out. With size, you don’t want to get a lure that is way too small. It may be hidden behind forage way too easily, and if the walleye can’t find the lure how will they ever bite? So get a medium size lure that they should be able to see in between weeds. Also try a jig that spins or vibrates; this will be another way the walleye will be attracted to your lure. Live bait would most likely be the best bait to use, though. It will tempt those walleyes to bite quicker. Try some minnows or even some nice juicy night crawlers as your bait. You may be catching your limit rather quickly!
