Five Missouri River Walleye Fishing Secrets

3.      Winter Fishing Means Slowing Down – When fishing in the winter, there are two things to remember above all else, the fish are going to be less active as their bodies slow down and they feed less.  This is because food is scarce so they do not move around to conserve their body temperature.  Fishing in waters that are not as deep as summer and fall is a good place to start.  If you do not find them, try to go a bit deeper or a bit shallower on the Missouri River.  Once you pull in one walleye, you can be assured that there are going to be more in the same location.

You want to use jigs and spoons during this time of year as well as adding live or plastic worms to attract the fish’s attention.  Move the bait slowly so they can see it and strike.  Since they are not moving as fast, if you try to move the bait fast, they are not going to have the time to strike it.

4.      Stay Shallow in the Spring – When fishing for walleye on the Missouri River in the spring, you want to stay shallow.  This is because the walleye are going to be spawning and they do this in the shallower waters.  Look for them at sandbars in the river as well as areas where springs may feed the river.

You can use spoons, jigs and crankbaits effectively during spawning season.  Make sure you move the lures around as the fish are going to be actively feeding to have the energy for the spawning.  They are going to be hitting at just about anything during this time of the year.

5.      Live Baits – When possible, use live baits along with your jigs and spoons.  Make sure to hook the minnows behind the dorsal so they are going to live longer and so that they can move around to attract the attention of the walleye.  When you are fishing in the early morning or late night feeding times, this is even more important.
