Four Pike Fishing Lures

Pike Fishing Techniques

When it comes to pike fishing, technique is important. It’s recommended that you use a medium sized spinning rod combined with a good quality spinning reel for the best results. When seeking out the larger pike, it’s always a good idea to use a wire trace to prevent from losing your catch.

One of the best techniques to use when fishing for pike is trolling. This allows you to cover a lot of ground and you can use several lines at once giving you more fishing options. You can use different baits to see which one the pike is attracted to the most and you can fish at different depths to find the pike faster all at the same time. This is why trolling is so popular among anglers.

Casting is also a popular technique used when fishing for pike. In the spring and fall they can be found in shallow areas and around weeds but they will move out to the deeper waters where it’s cooler in the summer. Pike are attracted to calm waters with lots of vegetation. When casting, aim for beyond the target area and slowly reel your bait through the middle of the strike zone. You can slowly pick up speed until you reach the speed that gets the best results.

Fly fishing is steadily growing in popularity because it’s a great way to catch pike and many other species as well. However, when seeking out this species, you will need to do a lot of practicing because it does take some skill to reel them in. One of the reasons why fly fishing is great for this species is because it’s a great way to fish in the shallows where the pike stay most of the time. Plus, the flies are so light they very seldom scare the fish away. Flies are brightly colored and they can move quickly which is two more things that help to entice the pike to strike.

Regardless of which technique you decide to use, once you catch the pike they need to be handled carefully. It’s recommended that you use a net to help support their weight and remove the hook while they are still in the water. Another thing that you need to be aware of is the fact that pike have very sharp teeth. If they bite you, it could cause some serious problems and do a lot of damage.
