Hi Dan, Im currently living in Iowa and am heading to the Red River in Canada tommorow morning I believe its around an hour north of Winnipeg…can you please tell me what the walleye report is up there and what sort of bait is working for them right now? thanks for your help! Brian
Red River fishing in Canada is a great fishing expedition. The bait that seems to be working for anglers is trolling crankbaits, salted or live minnows and bottom bouncers. It is a great time on the Red River, the walleye do not seem to be slowing down as fast as they are in other areas. As of the latest report, the walleye fishing is in full swing. You can use the minnows, which seems to be the attraction for the walleye moving into the deeper waters.
There are still areas where the vegetation is thick underwater, a good fish locator will help you find some areas where the walleye are hiding out. The walleye are being found in the deeper water by underwater rock formations as well. The idea way to fish would be on a boat and do a slow troll around the areas on the Red River where the fish seem to be waiting. The bait shops up in that area provide some good areas for anglers to fish as they hear the reports daily.
Because conditions change from day to day, you would be wise to check with the local bait shop to find out where the better walleye fishing is going on. It might be somewhere different than it was the day before. Keep in mind though, the fish are biting and the catch is bringing in some nice sized walleyes. You to can catch some good-sized walleyes up there on the Red River in Canada.
