The Mississippi is a great place to fish for walleye. I have had many success stories with that river. The best thing to do on the Mississippi is troll. I set the jig with a minnow and do a slow troll. I also like to drift at times. There is a slight current over on the Monticello side closer to you. The walleye are by the humps and points located closer to shore. There is no reason to go deeper than you have to. I like to go fishing during May, June and then again in the last part of September as well as early October. In some areas, you might want to try the chartreuse lures. I have caught fish with the minnow and the chartreuse lures. I also like to use the fish locator because it seems that the walleye move around the Mississippi more so than anywhere else I have fished. I would say, get a map and find the points. I would start there and do not give up after a few minutes. It does take some time to get their attention. The bait should be watched. The walleye are short strikers and can snatch the bait and be gone. If you find the weed beds near the shores, you can just drop a jig and minnow into the weeds, but then again, make sure the walleye are there first. You are in the prime location for catching walleye. I have heard a lot of good things about Mille Lacs and know why you choose that area.
