I am sick of catching smaller than average walleye. Is there a technique I can use to target only the giant trophy walleye?
It is not so much the technique as it is the area that you fish. If you are fishing in a area where three or four pound walleye are relevant, then chances are, you are not going to see anything larger. That does not mean they are not there, they are well hidden and smarter. I know that on Lake Erie, the big fish are found around the shores, but also in the deeper waters. I do know that they are catching the bigger walleye with one-ounce jigs with a purple coloring. The weight however depends on the drift and wave conditions of the water. Anglers are using a big minnow to attract the trophy walleye. Sometimes when you use a smaller minnow, the larger walleyes are not going to be interested because they need something larger. Also, murky waters rather than clear waters are more apt to have the larger walleye. You can fish in areas where the waters are dark and strained to find some large walleye. I still have to say that the area where you fish plays a big part in the size of fish you are going to catch. I have heard of anglers catching the mother of all walleyes in lakes and rivers that never had large walleye before. I believe they do require a different size bait to even consider striking. If you know the area you are fishing in has the trophy walleye, try fishing the deeper waters with larger minnows and a heavier jig
