Lake Erie Walleye Tips

Tip Two: Use the Right Bait

The walleye is considered a lazy fish because they won’t go out of their way to seek out food. This is why the bait that you use is so important. You need to find something that entices them to strike. Live bait is an excellent choice but artificial lures work very well too. As long as the lure resembles the natural food source they are familiar with, they will go after it. With all the new technology that’s available today, lures are made to be so realistic that it’s very difficult to tell them apart from the real thing so, this is not a problem.

Therefore, the choice of whether to use live bait or artificial lures when seeking out the walleye is a personal decision. The walleye are highly attracted to minnows, night crawlers and believe it or not, leeches. All of these make excellent bait to use. However, the one thing that has made walleye fishing on Lake Erie so famous is the Erie Dearie. The term Erie Dearie is actually the trade name that was given to a “weight forward spinner blade” that was designed with a single hook and a night crawler. You simply have to give this one a try when fishing on this lake.

Tip Three: Choose the Right Technique

When it comes to catching walleyes, technique is important. Since the walleye is a rather lazy fish you need a technique that will get the bait in the area where they are located. Drift fishing is one of the best options to use when fishing Lake Erie for walleye. Two other great methods to use includes back-trolling and trolling.  All of these techniques will allow you to get the bait in the location where the walleye are located so you can do your best to entice them to strike.

Walleye fishing on Lake Erie is a fun and exciting experience that you’re sure to enjoy. If you live in the area, then you have the opportunity to go out anytime you wish because you can go fishing for this species all year long. If you’re visiting the area, there are many excellent places where you can stay to make your visit comfortable so you can get the most out of all of your fishing adventures.
