What is the world record for largest walleyes caught?

Good question, and here are some great answers for you. Back in 1982 Al Nelson was fishing in a tournament, taking place at Greer’s Ferry Lake. He caught a great 22 pound and 11 ounce walleye, beating the old record of 21 pounds 12 ounces from 1979. Let’s go back a bit earlier to 1960, when there was a 25 pound walleye caught at Hickory Lake in Tennessee. Some doubt was placed on that story when a photo didn’t quite match up with the claim of how heavy the fish was. How this works is a photo of the fish was seen and it had been placed on a picnic table. Around it were different items. Picking an item that is the same distance away from the camera as the fish is, you compare how many of that item it would take to make the same size of the fish, and simple algebra will go ahead and let you figure out how much the fish weighed and how long it was. This was done with that Tennessee fish, and when the length was found out most walleye in that category came in around only 16 to 18 pounds. In order to actually weigh what they were claiming, that walleye would have to have 30% more fat, but the picture showed that the Tennessee fish wasn’t fatter. Thus the fish was taken from the book as the biggest walleye caught. This didn’t happen before Nelson caught his walleye; he got a state record and earned $10,000 for it. But if the record had been checked before this time he would have received $25,000 instead. Tennessee still claims that the record is still held for the 25 pound walleye, but according to the record books it now belongs to Al Nelson.
