What is slip float trolling and when does it work the best when Walleye fishing?
Trolling is the technique of slowing your boat down to a bare minimum speed to move through the water. A slip float creates a virtual block on a fishing line that is determined and set by you. This allows for you to effectively fish at any depth level that you choose. In order to act as a slip float, a bobber needs to have a hollowed out center from top to bottom. There are slip float bobbers available in all imaginable shapes, sizes and colors. The two essential elements to a slip float are a bead and a stopper. To assemble a slip float, attach the bead to the fishing line and thread through the float. Create a stopper effect in the line by tying a knot at the desired length. Many anglers prefer creating a nail knot with bright colored Dacron line. Repeat the tying process several times to ensure the knot remains tight. Bring these two elements together to carry out the slip float trolling technique. It is effective when Walleye fishing because it allows you to target where Walleye hang out the most. Walleye fish hang out at deeper depth levels. Using slip float trolling allows you to reach these levels easier than with a traditional bobber. Once you have determined the depth walleye are at, set the slip float slider to the appropriate distance, drop the line and begin to troll the area. There will be at least two indications that you have a bite. The first one is when the slip float bobber dips below the water surface. The second indication will come from the bobber sitting higher than normal or laying flat on the water surface.
