One for the Record Books

What is the world record biggest walleye? Where was it caught? What are some U.S. records to shoot for?

One thing a walleye angler loves more than tracking down the elusive walleye is reeling in one that breaks a record. Back in 1960, the world record walleye was pulled out of Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. The walleye weighed in at a massive 25 pounds. On a state level, virtually all of the 50 states list a walleye on their record books. Alabama starts off the record holder list with a 10 pound 14 ounce walleye that was caught in the Weiss Reservoir. Arizona’s Show Low Lake is where the record 16 pound 1.76 ounce walleye was found. Next up is Colorado and the 18 pound 13 ounce walleye that was caught at Standley Lake. Connecticut walleye record weighs in at 14 pounds 8 ounces in Candlewood Lake. Moving on is the Georgia walleye caught in the Richard B. Russell Lake that weighed 11 pounds 6 ounces. Idaho has more than just potatoes to offer. Its record walleye came from Salmon Falls Creek Reservoir at a weight of 16 pounds 2 ounces. Illinois holds the state record walleye from the Kankakee River weighing in at an even 14 pounds. Right next door in Indiana is where the state record 14 pound 4 ounce walleye was caught in the Tippecanoe River. Walleye in Iowa hold down the record books at 14 pounds 8 ounces in the Des Moines River. Kentucky holds the walleye record with its 21 pound 8 ounce monster pulled from the Lake Cumberland waters. Heading up north to Massachusetts is where the record walleye of an even 11 pounds was caught in the Quabbin Reservoir. A couple of big pounder walleye have been recorded in several other states as well. There is the massive 21 pound 1 ounce walleye from Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri. The 18 pound 14 ounce one in Columbia River of Washington and the 13 pound 7 ounce walleye pulled from Clyde River in Vermont. Rounding out the list of big boy walleyes holding their own in the record books is the 18 pounder from Wisconsin’s High Lake and the 15 pounder from Virginia’s New River. These should give you a few starting points. Happy Hunting!

  1. Show Low Arizona says:

“Arizona’s Show Low Lake is where the record 16 pound 1.76 ounce walleye was found”: funny thing is I think that Show Low Lake is located near Pinetop!
