September Walleye Fishing Towards BWCA

My son and I are going walleye fishing the first week of September. We live in the Twin Cities, but want to go to what you consider to be one of the top walleye lakes for that time of year. We want to stay in Minnesota, but location within the state is not all that important. Also, if I want to go towards the BWCA, what lake is attractive that time of year? Last, what is the best bait or lure for walleyes in September? Thanks Bob

Quetico Provincial Park of Ontario, Canada is one of the very best locations to fish for walleye in BWCA. You could not go wrong there in Early September should you decide to head out that way. You will definitely want to invest some time just enjoying the surroundings and you’ll want to be prepared for the fishing. There’s much to see and learn here. Get out there and really enjoy all that this location has to offer. Now, to answer your questions. Gull Lake is a great location to fish in the early part of September as well. It is located in Crow Wing and Cass counties and is comprised of almost 10,000 acres of varied and rich fishing. Steamboat Bay on Gull Lake is particularly attractive. Using a jig and minnows all the way from early September to the end of October, will likely see as much action on Gull Lake as you can stand. If you are looking for amenities, Gull Lake is also known for some of the best. For a great fishing experience just try Mushroom head jigs with plastic worms and you are sure to get really good results. Besides great walleye fishing, there is plenty of Northern Pike, Bluegills, Bass, Crappie and Sunfish in Gull Lake as well. Everyone from novice to expert anglers will find plenty to love at Gull Lake. When it comes to fishing for walleye in early September, it simply can not be beat. You and your son will love it.
