I’ve been told to watch for Mayflies hatching when I’m Walleye fishing - why?
When you are contemplating going walleye fishing, you will want to know if the Mayflies are hatching because the Mayfly is your competition. The walleye seem to feed on the nymphs and not on your bait. If the walleye have an easy food supply, they will undoubtedly choose a constant food supply then the one you are offering. They tend to fill up on the nymphs rather than your bait.
Some anglers however, fish right over the Mayfly hatching bed to hook a walleye. This of course is going to cause you some aggravation with the Mayflies themselves. If you choose this way to fish for walleye, you can generally use a small leech, which moves the same way the larva does. This method does work for most, but it is still a buggy mess if you are in the middle of the Mayfly hatch.
If you choose to walleye fish during the Mayfly hatch, you might try fishing at night when the walleye seem to feed on the nymphs. During the day hours, the walleye are full from eating all night on the larva. You just have to take a chance, but for the most part, you can fishing during a Mayfly hatch as long as are in the area of the hatch, which takes some real dedication to fishing. You could wait for the last day of hatching, which is usually within a week after the hatch starts. This would be the idea time to fish walleye since their food source is going away.
