If I want to catch the Walleye leaving the spawning grounds – where is the best place to be?
The best place to be to catch walleye when they are leaving the spawning grounds is in about seven to twelve feet of water, with temperatures of about fifty to fifty degrees. This is where the walleye go to spawn and when all is done, they start heading back to deeper waters. The females will feed a little after spawning, but during spawning, they will not feed at all. The males however, feed all the time, but in much smaller quantities. The perfect time of year to catch walleye after spawning is in March and April depending on the location.
The males actually move to the spawning grounds before the females do. It will be rocky underwater areas such as nearby dams, waterfalls and rivers as well as streams. Once the ice breaks up on rivers, walleye will start heading to the area for spawning. On the way back from spawning is the best time to catch walleye, you need to be at the mouth of the rivers or streams. You could also fish right outside the mouth of the river hooking the walleye before they head out to the deeper waters.
You will have better luck waiting until spawning is complete before hooking a walleye. Before spawning, the females feed a little and you catch some large females at this time. The best place to be is somewhere close to the spawning ground when they are starting to feed more. You have better luck after spawning then before the spawn.
