What is the best way to troll for Walleye?
Look. The best thing to keep in mind here is that these aren’t lazy old channel catfish. This is a sport fish and it requires hard work to get a walleye’s attention. Use a shiny silver spinner and keep it in fairly quick motion. Live bait might also be employed here either minnows or night crawlers. It isn’t necessary though so keep on fishing even when the bait runs out. Timing may be the most important factor of all. When they’re biting you can catch ‘em and when they aren’t then forget about it.
The other thing to remember to do is to keep the fish swimming up toward the spinner. Walleye aren’t bottom feeding carp. They are aggresive and watch toward the surface of the water. These sport fish rule the great lakes and other large bodies of water. They grow to pretty good sizes and are worth the effort of active trolling. Also remember that although these aren’t salt water fish they do weigh quite a bit compared to other fresh water fish that you may be used to catching on shore.
You will have to employ reasonably strong test line and rod. A strong but lightweight fishing rod perhaps graphite may be best. Again this of course isn’t like fishing for marlin or even sturgeon but for fresh water fishing they’re pretty big. Be ready to work for this catch. But then it wouldn’t make much sense to go to the bother of going out on the lake if you weren’t prepared for the hard work of relaxation, would it?
