What type of tackle would you use for night fishing for walleye?
When you are fishing for those walleye at night the key is to use the right tackle. However, there are a few minor details that will help you as well. For instance, don’t make any noise, or at least as little noise as possible. Walleyes usually like deeper waters and those waters known as “flats.” Once you have found that “spot” it is best to stay as quiet as possible as to not spook the walleye. Usually at night you will want to use those types of jigs that move around, however not constantly moving, as walleye are the type of fish that tend to stay towards the bottom of the water. But using bright jigs at night often help the walleye see them, and eventually after patience the walleye will attempt to go after the jig. Once the walleye “taps” at the jig a few times, then it will usually attempt to carry it off. When this occurs, give the walleye a little slack to make it think the jig is not putting up a fight. Then when you are certain that the walleye has in fact tried to swallow the jig, it is fairly easy to snag the walleye and reel it in. It is better to use a little extra weight at night as well. This allows the jigs to stay in one position and wiggle rather than move with the undercurrent. At this point it is usually easier to use a net for the walleye and keep a small light handy so you can remove the jig. After this is done, the process can be repeated.
