Walleye Are Drawn To Frogs Spawning

Are Walleyes drawn to spawning frogs?

Walleyes are drawn to frogs and when frogs are spawning, the walleye will feed on the spawn that frogs have laid. This is the reason for the frog population being smaller in some areas. Many anglers use frogs as bait because a walleye will strike the frog just as it does the minnow or night crawler. If you have fishing for walleye in a river or an area heavily populated with frogs, you will want to find out what time of year the frogs spawn and plan accordingly.

Walleyes are predators that strike salamanders, minnows, night crawlers, frogs, Mayflies, crayfish and lures that resemble and attract them as being live bait. The walleye is mainly a fish eater, but they will feed on other things such as these to maintain life. In general, a walleye will eat anything that moves and something only a bit smaller than them.

So now you know that walleye will eat just about anything, you can plan your fishing for areas where frogs gather and spawn. Although keep in mind that you might have a rough time attracting a walleye when they have so much other food to eat unless you offer them something more appealing.

Also, keep in mind if you think you can use a spawning frog to bait the walleye, keep them in water temperatures that they are use to or they will die and not attract the walleye. This is something that beginning anglers do not think about when using frogs as bait.
