What stragegies can I use to get walleye bites in Saginaw Bay?
For starters, decide what size walleye you want to chase after. It has been the experience of many anglers that the big walleyes prefer to hang out in deeper water levels. This has as much to do with water temperature as with forage availability. The big walleye prefer warmer waters with a variety of forage to hide behind and feed off of. Be prepared to fight. Deep water walleyes are a little more on the finicky side than their shallow water counterparts. Weather conditions, water temperatures and smaller feeding window times all figure into when and where the large sized walleye will be hiding. Small to medium size walleye will likely be found in water depths up to 12 feet. This water depth level is going to comprise of a majority of the inner bay portion of Saginaw Bay. Now that you know where to find various sizes of walleye, let’s talk a little bit about the best way to catch walleye on Saginaw Bay. One of the best ways is by trolling with Storm lures Hot-n-Tot with a variation of using the rattle tot once in awhile. Another option along these lines is the Hot-n-Tot Pygmy baited with a night crawler. The light weight of this combination works wonders on walleye. There are some ideal rigging strategies to try as well. One is harness rigging where the diving bill molded into the face carries your bait selection quickly to depths needed to attract walleye. Another rigging strategy is the spoon rig. The quick action sinker motion peaks the interest of walleyes. Match any of these techniques with snap weights and a collection of live and plastic baits and you are well on your way to successfully fishing the Saginaw Bay for walleye.
