Iam from kansas and plan on doing some walleye fishing at Cheney Resivior this spring, my question is at what water temperature do walleye usually start the spawn? I cought some nice ones there last year around the 9th of march but I think this year it will be later because we had a colder winter ths year and it will take more time for the water to warm up.
Fishing for walleye at Cheney Reservoir this year should produce some nice sized walleye. The best water temperature is between forty-two and fifty-four degrees. Since this winter has been colder and longer than past winters, you might have to wait until the end of March or the beginning of April. The best thing to do is watch the fishing reports for water temperatures. Once the water temperature starts to warm up, get your gear ready and be prepared to get out and do some fishing. I would wait until the water temperature holds the temperature for a few days before heading out. The sun may warm the water, but a few days of freezing weather, can lower the water temperature again. Once the walleye start coming in from the deeper winter waters, they will keep coming, but they will be in no rush to get to warmer water if temperature drops again. Watch your weather or fishing reports to find out when the water temperature rises. I would say that the reservoir water temperature is going to be a bit higher than a lake temperature, so you want to hear a report that details the water temperature in different areas. You can start checking water temperatures as early as March, but this winter has been cold and long. Look for the ideal temperature between forty-two and fifty-four for a run on walleye. Spawning can be anytime the water temperature is right, there is no set time or month in fishing.
