Can I use a Texas Rig for Walleye fishing? Are there certain conditions in which this rig will better than others?
A Texas Rig is a good choice when you’re fishing for Walleye on a lake or river that has depressions, holes or pockets on the bottom but there aren’t a lot of rocks present. It’s an extremely versatile rig with pinpoint accuracy for casting due to the fact that it doesn’t use a leader. The weedless Texas Rig is a good choice when fishing in the brush as well as around the levees and dams. (use a lighter weight to avoid snagging on the rocks). I prefer to use the Texas Rig when I’m fishing in clear water so I can actually guide the bait into the holes. With this rig, I let the weight sink to the bottom. When I feel the tap as it hits, I use a slight tug to pull it upward. Reeling in the slack, I let the rig settle and hit bottom again. The weight makes a lightly noise when it hits and the motion gives a smooth movement to the bait. Although the Texas Rig was originally designed to be used with a plastic worm, I’ve used it with live bait as well with good results. Remember if you’re using a minnow to hook it just behind both lips. This hook placement will keep the bait alive and allow it to swim around enough to attract the Walleye.
