My dream is to catch a trophy walleye. Where would you go, and what would you do to catch one?
This is a great question. The reason that the trophy walleye get so big is that they are leery of their surroundings. They live in the water and are only going to strike something that they cannot refuse. It is going to take something special to make them strike. The first thing to do is make sure your fishing line is going to withhold the fight and the weight of the trophy walleye. Next, you have to find the water that is known for the big ones and where they hide in that water. Lake Erie in April near the Bass Islands is going to find you catching some ten pounders or larger. The best way to catch the walleye is with trolling with boards. You are going to cover the area best this way. I would use a crankbait when the water temperature is under fifty and anything above fifty, I would use spinners rigs with night crawlers. Fork Beck is another good place to catch trophy walleye with spinner rigs and a bottom bouncer. The walleye are going to be in the shallow waters up to twelve feet deep. Look by the humps and points. In the fall try Winnipeg River and in the summer months try Lake of the Woods. During the fall on Winnipeg, the big fish are looking for big baitfish right before winter sets in. This is prime fishing in October with a jig close to the mouth of the river by Traverse Bay.
